The Review
Little Miss Sunshine was a film that was produced in 2006. This film is about the the dedication of the Hoover family in their attempt to get their daughter Olive to audition for Little Miss Sunshine in California. As Olive Hoover is excited to hear she has the opportunity to audition for it and this brings up serious problems for her family. Richard Hoover (Father), is unhappy that the his wife, Sheryl Hoover, is planning on making the trip from Albuquerque to California. Richard is a motivational speaker who is attempting to jump start his motivational program and book. Unfortunately he has not heard anything from his representative. Since he does not have a contract yet he is making no money. He realizes this and tries to discourage Sheryl from taking the unnecessary trip to California. Sheryl is quick to reject the offer and tells the family they are headed on a road trip to take Olive (Daughter) to audition for Little Miss Sunshine.
Once the family packs their bags they quickly encounter problems. One of the problems is that the clutch on their van has given out. Since it is the weekend and they are driving a foreign van the part will take up to a week to arrive. The mechanic they took the van to lets them know they can still drive the van as long as they push the van before taking off. Soon enough they are back on the road headed towards California. Everything seems well until they are confronted with a tragedy. Grandpa Hoover passes away while he was sleeping and the family is heartbroken. They arrive at the hospital and this is where you think the movie ends. Olive will have to miss her audition for Little Miss Sunshine, but there's a twist in the story. The Hoover family decides to leave the hospital with the corpse of Grandpa Hoover. As risky this was to do, we see the families dedication to get to the audition. As they continue on their way to the audition Dwayne (Brother & Son) discovers he is color blind. He took a vow of silence and he promised he wouldn't speak until he gets to the Air Force Academy. When he learns he is color blind we see a different side of Dwayne. Dwayne is hysterically yelling and crying. When his mother attempts to comfort him, she reassures him that everything will be okay because he has his family supporting him.
As they continue to the audition they realize that the freeway they are on is not taking them to hotel where the auditions are being held. Richard makes a quick decision and gets off the freeway. He ends up on the sidewalk and heads toward the hotel. The time to sign in for the audition gets closer and the Hoover family has still not yet made it to the hotel. After many turns and driving on the sidewalk they make it to the audition. They are a minute late and they encounter some problems signing in but they do. Olive is ecstatic because she is going to dance for Little Miss Sunshine, her family is not too convinced she can do this. The only one who saw her perform was Grandpa Hoover because he was instructing her. As everyone tries to discourage Olive, she reassures herself and she goes on stage. Her performance was mind-blowing, and not in a good way. Her performance was unsuitable for a child her age. As the crowd begins to disagree with her performance her family goes on stage and begin to dance. At that precise moment we in the Little Miss Sunshine we realize we all go through our own personal problems but we don't have to face them alone.
Little Miss Sunshine is a great movie that will make you cry, laugh, and make you scratch your head all at once but it is a great film nonetheless. The message it delivers to its audience is powerful. This message shows that not only Albuquerque families but families across the world will do anything for their loved ones.
